The breath taking escarpments, lakes natural reserves and a cultural and sporting paradise, the North Rift tourist circuit is a splendor to behold. However the broken infrastructure and inadequate marketing remain the bane of this circuit.
With a bit of marketing and infrastructure rehabilitation the circuit is an ideal break away for business executive’s from the hustles and bustles of there offices. Some 125 miles from Nakuru, sits the lake Bogoria Spa Resort, the only Natural fresh water heated spa pool in the country, but despite this it gets a small number of local visitors. This region may not have the “Big Five” but there are a lot of tourists’ attractions both for the local and international tourism but they have not been adequately marketed. To a large extent cultural tourism has been marketed in this area. The roads leading to Lake Bogoria National Reserve are also in a terrible state after they were washed away by the rains some years back. The five kilometer boat ride transfer from the mainland in the calm waters of Lake Baringo to the Island Camp on Ol Kokwa island takes about 20 minutes. Once on the island, one enters a totally different world. Sleeping quarters are tents in a natural bushy setting and waking up with bird chirping away merrily in the trees is and experience of a life time especially for city dwellers. Before breakfast visitors take a boat trip round the lake to experience the precision of the fish eagle as it flies out to catch tilapia thrown to it by the boat captain. The camp is popular with Kenyans seeking an exclusive getaway from the city for the weekend of holiday, wedding parties and bird watchers.
