Wildebeest Migration



The wildebeest of the Serengeti land the great heard's many fellow travelers trace a clockwise curcuit of the plains. Follow the birthing season in the south that is late January to early February. The heard then moves northwest, chasing the rain and abunduce of grass , arriving at the northeast end of the circuit in July or August. Knowing where the wildebeest will be with precision is impossible but generally the migrations as such.

Late December - Early March: Southern Serengeti/ Ngoronogro. The heard recuperates form the migration of the previous year, births foals and gathers strength for the upcoming migration North.

Late March - May: Western Serengeti/ Lake Victoria. The southern grasslands are drying out while the grasslands of the western Serengeti remain rich.

May- July: Northwestern Serengeti / Maasai Mara . The wildebeest continue north, crossing rivers and lakes, pressing on to the Maasai Mara. Breeding takes place during this time.

July to October: Maasai mara. Depending on the duration of the rains, the wildebeest will linger in the Mara until Late September to early October.

October - December Eastern Serengeti / Ngorongoro The herd makes its return to the southern Serengeti and the birthing grounds, gathering strength for the upcoming migration north
