Last year it was held in Kisumu in Nyanza province with a variety of activities. The 27th of September is Celebrated world wide in recognition of the role tourism plays in economic development. Kenya is a member of the World Tourism Organisation and has been observing the World Tourism Week annually for the last 2 years. The main aim of the week is to create awareness about tourism among Kenyans and promote domestic tourism. 

The Celebrations have alos inthe past been used by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife and other stake holders to open up tourism circuits by creating awareness in tourism participation and investment opportunities that abound in various parts of Kenya. The theme for this year is " Tourism Enriches". This them is revolves around community based tourism. This is a form of tourism where local people have substantial control in its development and management, and hence it largely benefits local economy.
