Royal Tours Africa:Kenya safaris

Kenya’s original civilization came into being as early as the 7th Century when Greek, Roman and Persian merchants followed by Arabian groups began arriving at the coast, influencing this now vital port off the coast of Eastern Africa.

Arabs occupied this region in the mid 17th century and established the coastline as a trading centre for Eastern Africa trading in ivory, rhino horn and coconut.

The British then developed a foothold when an expedition led by Scottish Nationalist Joseph Thompson, sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society, was the first group to reach Lake Victoria from Mombasa through Maasailand. Eventually, all land between the Indian Ocean and what is now Uganda was occupied by the British and the Kenya-Uganda railway was built. The East Africa Protectorate was formed and Britain then colonized the land by encouraging settlers to farm the fertile highlands.

The Kikuyu resisted colonization and the Mau Mau uprising followed, leading to a national movement bringing colonial leadership to an end lowering the British Flag in 1963 and raising the Kenyan flag.

Jomo Kenyatta was Kenya’s first President leading the country until his death in 1978, who was replaced by Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi who ruled the Kanu party until 2002.

The Current Executive is lead by H.E. Mwai Kibaki assisted by a Vice President and Cabinet Ministers.
